Valentine’s Day is a holiday we feel we should celebrate, but are sometimes at a loss for what to do. There are simple, fun things you can do on Valentine’s Day that are more memorable than dinner and a movie. For instance, my husband and I aren’t really into Valentine’s Day.
So instead of making it a big to-do. We take the kids and go out for ice cream. I only ask that somewhere in our conversation, we say Happy Valentine’s Day. It is simple and my kids look forward to it every year. Let’s check out some other simple, fun and inexpensive things to do as a couple, friend, or family.
1. Borrow some snowshoes.
Call up your outdoorsy friend and borrow her snowshoes for the day. Take your partner, your bestie, or your kiddos out for a brisk and refreshing tromp through nature.
2. Cook up a pantry surprise!
Instead of making a fancy dinner this Valentine’s Day, summon up your creative culinary skills instead. Peruse the pantry and fridge for ingredients you can each turn into something edible…I mean delicious!
3. Picnic at the park
Cook dinner at home and pack it up for a picnic in the park. This is a great one to surprise the other with a special dinner for two. Plan to make something that is special to your partner and leave a note for them to meet you at the park for dinner under the stars.
4. Park the car and…star gaze.
Take a drive to your special spot, pack a picnic basket of junk food and gaze at the stars. Do your research ahead of time and print out a map of the constellations to search for.
5. Roller skating
Relive your childhood by going to your local skating rink. I know this sounds crazy, but enjoy some time on skates. You can show off your mad skating skills and have fun laughing as you learn to skate with each other all over again.
6. Outdoor Movie
Watch a play, movie, or listen to music and hang out under the stars for free. Yes…FREE! Another great local option for Texans.
7. Follow a YouTube dance tutorial.
What better time to let loose and learn the latest dance moves than in the comfort of your own home. Get your smart TV tuned to YouTube, search for a new dance and practice until you can put on a stunning performance your kids will be sure to be mortified of.
8. Test drive your dream car.
This one was my hubby’s idea. Head to the dealership and test drive your dream cars. Act like you’re living large for the day.
9. Find a great bike or walking trail.
If you are looking for more physical things to do on Valentine’s Day, this is a great one to work off all of those Valentine’s calories. Throw the bikes in the back of the truck and take in some of your local bike trails, or ditch the bikes all together and hike those trails. Be sure to bring your water, snacks, and trail map.
10. Go to the water or theme park together
Do you have a Six Flags, Disneyland, or water park near by and happen to have an annual pass. Goof off and be kids again. Ride the big waterslides and enjoy each other’s company without kids.
11. Bake up some Valentine’s goodies and deliver them.
Bake our favorite goodies and share the love with family, friends, and neighbors.
12. Spend the night at a local bed and breakfast
I believe you can have as much fun in your own city as you can on vacation. Take this opportunity to explore your own town. Stay the night at a local bed and breakfast to get the entire feel of exploring a new area.
13. Cake Wars Valentine’s style.
We are actually trying this one, this year. Try your hand at a little cake war. Consult the Food Network, a cake decorating blog, Pinterest, or YouTube and spend a few hours making the most amazing cake of your life!
14. Have a beach treasure hunt.
If you’re lucky enough to live by a beach or lake, plan a special Valentine’s treasure hunt for your honey or family with a treasure box filled with little Valentine’s gifts. They will love it. If you don’t live by the beach take a trip to the beach. Spend the day in the sun, water, and sand.
15. Dance Hall
Twirl around on the dance floor like no one is watching! Dance your heart out and feel the music!
16. Take a backroad
Remember when you were in high school and you would ride in the middle of the truck next to your boyfriend and he would put his arm around you? I know I do! While you may be thinking, yeah I did that in high school. Why would I do it now? You know why? Because it makes you feel young again! Plus, it lets you get close to your hubby!
Whatever you choose to do this Valentine’s Day, be spontaneous and think outside the box. Keep the spark alive in your marriage and have some fun together laughing and enjoying each other’s company.
What are your plans this Valentine’s Day?
