Cleaning Tips for the Busy SAHM + A Free Printable

"My house is a disgusting mess" - Sound familiar? These lazy, step-by-step cleaning and decluttering tips will whip any house into shape in record time!

You and I both know that with summer coming, our schedules are going to get CRAZY! Cleaning is going to be the last thing on your to-do list. But let’s face it, when your family and friends start coming over you’ll wish you had spent more time to get the cleaning done. Now isn’t the time to start purging, but you can get a few things done per day to feel like your home isn’t a complete disaster.

Put Together a Cleaning Kit

All your favorite cleaning supplies in one convenient spot. I don’t know about you, but I have some must have products when it comes to cleaning. You will need a sturdy, decent-sized basked to keep your kit together in one place. I find the cleaning baskets to be a plastic shopping basket style with a flat base and strong handles. It can carry a fair amount of weight. My must have items are an all purpose cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, disinfectant, glass cleaner and a shower & Tile cleaner. Don’t forget the sponges, scrub brushes, etc that go along with cleaning.

Focus on Areas that Matter Most

I have been guilty of taking a laundry basket and dumping items from the Family Room into it, throwing the basket in my closet, and shutting the door before guests come over. After talking to friends, I know I’m not the only one. I always vowed that next time, I would clean the Family Room or important areas first before doing anything else.

Cleaning tip #2 is making sure you focus on the areas that matter most. Keeping your main living areas tidy can is a great place to focus.

Prevention

You will save yourself tons of time and effort preventing messes before they happen. Have your kids sit at the table to eat instead of other places in the home. Only allow drinks in certain areas of the house. Try to teach your kids to keep their rooms tidy and pick up after themselves. This last one was a difficult one for us. By the time bedtime rolled around, I was just ready for them to be in bed. Things finally clicked when we made picking up a part of our bedtime routine. If any toy was left out, it was in “time-out” for a few days.

Use Microfiber

I just barely discovered the wonders of microfiber. Let me tell you, it is amazing! Microfiber or even cotton cleaning cloths do a much better job of scrubbing and picking up messes than paper towels. I just throw mine in the washer. Although I do save paper towels for the ickiest messes.

Don’t Clean Up Alone

Friends don’t let friends clean up messes alone. Ha! Seriously though, have your family help. I always tell my kids they made the mess, they can help clean it up. Like I said before, we’ve made it part of our daily routine. My kids have come to expect cleaning up after themselves at some point of the day. If your kids are old enough, give them daily chores they need to do. This will help them learn responsibility and you’ll be less stressed out. Sounds like a win-win to me!

Wash Dishes

Wash your dishes after every meal. Have your family rinse and put their dishes in the dishwasher. This goes for cups or glasses used during the day too. I like waking up to a clutter free kitchen. Starting the dishwasher every night has helped keep the kitchen cleaner.

Cleaning Hacks

Cleaning hacks can change the way you clean your home altogether. Pinterest is full of ideas on things you can do to get the job done quicker. For instance did you know that after cleaning your baseboards, a dryer sheet will help get rid of future dust OR you can get rid of a funky bathroom smell with vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice. So simple and yet I wouldn’t have thought of it.

Daily, Weekly, Monthly Breakdown

The final cleaning tip is about breaking down your to-do list. I find that when I break my cleaning to do list into daily, weekly, and monthly it doesn’t seem as daunting. Honestly who has time to set aside a whole day to clean the house?! Not me.

I’ve been using this breakdown for years. It has helped saved my sanity. On this list I have things I do daily. Each day I add on a room to effusive on. Don’t have a list? I’ve gotcha covered. Sign up on the Motherhood page to get a PDF emailed straight to you or click here to grab yours.
