Tips on Getting Over Feeling Overwhelmed During the Holidays

The joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances in our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives.” – Russel M Nelson

The Holiday season can be a stressful time for you or the ones you love. Defeat the feeling of overwhelm with these 6 simple things you can do.

Sometimes life just gets the best of us. It has happened to me in business and in my personal life. When overwhelmed, you feel the situation no matter how big or small is too much to handle. It can also make you feel helpless, defeated, stupid, or stuck. It can be easy to play the “whoa as me” card, but there are a few tips and tricks to getting over the feeling of being overwhelmed, to help you clear your mind and get your head back in the game.

You can use these when you’re feeling overwhelmed in your business, in motherhood, or in the midst of planning a major event. You can use all of the tips together or just a few at a time.

Get a Clear Thought of What You Want

Sometimes we get stuck when we are unclear about what we really want. Ask yourself this question, “What do I want?” Answer it as honestly and thorough as you can. You might be surprised by how difficult it is to answer this question. Often times, we make excuses and reasons why we can’t accomplish something. When we remove our limitations and fears, we find that we can do anything.

When you are thinking about what you want be as specific as you can. This will help you really find a clear path to what you want in business, motherhood, or the situation that is making you feel overwhelmed. For example if you are trying to purchase a new car, be specific with what features you want. If you are starting a business, be specific with the goals you want to achieve.

Take a Minute to Walk Away

In moments I feel I am on the verge of being overwhelmed I walk away and take a breather. This is especially true when trying something for the first time, or if the thing you are doing isn’t panning out the way you want it to. Sometimes a change of scenery, working out, or a change in what you are doing helps clear the frustration and helplessness to make room for you to focus.

The Holiday season can be a stressful time for you or the ones you love. Defeat the feeling of overwhelm with these 6 simple things you can do.

Focus & Motivation

Now that you know what you want, you have a better idea of how to achieve it. Make a goal(s) to help you achieve it. Stay focused and motivated. Don’t look to anyone else for your determination, be self-motivated . You are a rock star! You can do this! You can check out tips to increase your productivity here.

Learn to Say No

Just say no! I’m sure you’ve heard that before. If you are already overwhelmed don’t take on more. It is okay to say no. That person will understand that you are at your limit. If they don’t that is their problem.

I have a business associate who is always so busy with her work. She tells me she just can’t handle anymore projects, but just can’t tell people no. She is so busy it is affecting her family and her health. My best advice is to say no and make limits. Is what you are doing worth ill feelings in your family or your health. The money might be nice, but it isn’t worth it. Just say no!

Plan, Organize, Prioritize

Goals don’t get achieved by just thinking about them. You need to take action to reach your goals and to help you not feel so overwhelmed. Plan and set mini goals to achieve your overall goal. Prioritize your time to make sure you can get it all done in a timely fashion. Keep yourself organized to reach the main goal.

Set Limits

You are amazing! Honestly as much as we’d like to do it all, we can’t. Decide on what your limits should be. This could be a limit on how many projects you take, how many holiday parties you throw, how many new customers you take on, how many activities you go to, etc. Everyone’s limits will be different depending on their unique life, abilities and preferences. Just make sure you decide based on what is doable for you, so that you avoid getting in over your head. Set your limits and stick to them.

Push Through It

You can do this. If you started something that you really want to achieve, but have gotten overwhelmed along the way don’t worry. You may not be able to control everything, but you are the deciding factor on how you can proceed through it. If you can retain control over how you act or react in the situation, you can avoid being overwhelmed and allowing the situation to overtake you.

I hope this gives you a glimpse of hope. Everyone goes through times of feeling overwhelmed. I feel like the busyness and expectations of the Holidays makes it worse. If that is the case: simplify everything this Holiday. You don’t need to throw a huge dinner party by yourself. Ask for help or maybe just have a cocktail/dessert hour instead. You don’t need to have the picture perfect house and Christmas tree you saw on Instagram. Your handmade ornaments are beautiful. You don’t need to be crazy busy with your business. Your business will continue to grow even if you’re not doing it 24/7.

Take advantage of these small moments with your family. Create memories you will want to remember not regret this year. I’d hate for you to look back and wish you had done something different because you were too busy or too overwhelmed.

Let’s focus on this instead. What is your favorite thing about the Holiday season?
