Honestly the winter season can be tough to get out and do things. The weather is cooler, snow could be on the ground, the holidays are officially over, and it just isn’t always ideal. The cooler weather has made us quite good at finding things to do outside and inside, so good that I have 100 things to do this winter with your family. I have included some things going on around the San Antonio area as well. Family Friendly Events in January in San Antonio Texas
San Antonio has a variety of places to explore from free museum days to activities at the park, movie nights, and so much more. Check out the latest with what is going on for January.
Free Museum Day at the McNay Art Museum
Starting at 4p every Thursday is H-E-B Free General Admission at the McNay.
Market Days
The first Saturday of every month is the Helotes Market Days in downtown Helotes. Shop local vendors, crafters, and businesses; grab a tasty treat from many of the food vendors; or sit and relax while listening to the live band. You can also get a little antique shopping done with the local shops in downtown Helotes. The Market Days is January 4th, 10am till 4 pm.
Monster Jam
January 18-19th Monster Jam is making its way to San Antonio. Get the kids some earplugs and enjoy a night of races, tricks, fireworks, and stadium food. My kids love going with their dad every year. Be sure to grab your tickets before you go.
Snow Day at the Science Mill
The Science Mill will host a family-friendly Snow Day on Saturday, January 18th with real snow creating a winter wonderland full of science in the Texas Hill Country! In addition to special Snow Day activities 10am-2pm, the museum will be open from 10am-4pm. Visitors are encouraged to bring mittens or gloves to keep their hands warm while playing in the snow.
Snow Day at the Science Mill is open to all and activities are free with admission, which includes access to all of the Science Mill’s hands-on exhibits and a 3D movie. In the case of rain, this event will be postponed.
“Silent” Night Hike
January 18th is the Government Canyon Hike the Canyon event. Join the Friends of Government Canyon and the Sierra Club for a jointly-led guided night hike from 6-8p. The hike will range from 4 to 7 miles on one of the many trails at Government Canyon State Natural Area. No Registration needed, but entry fees to the park still apply.
Stock and Rodeo BBQ Cook-off
January 24-26 is the annual San Antonio Stock and Rodeo BBQ Cook-off and Festival. For General Attendees, there are LOTS of things to do for children of all ages at the cook off. They will have live music all day Friday and Saturday, vendors for shopping, plus plenty of beverages and great food to eat. Make sure you grab your tickets.
