Summertime in South Texas can be brutal. The day starts out nice, but by the end of it the day is just plain hot outside. Did I mention the hottest part of the day is at 6pm?! Yes, you heard that correctly. While most places start to cool off in the evening, we are still soaring in the high temps. To beat the heat we usually find anything with water – the pool, rivers, splash pads and AQUATICA! We are huge fans of Aquatica Sea World. It is a Texas, family friendly park. We love it and here is why.
Know Before You Go
Aquatica is owned by Sea World, and is located right next to the Sea World theme park in Orlando. There are a number of ticket options, including single day tickets, park hopper options to include time at Sea World and Discovery Cove, and Annual Passes. As with most theme park tickets, prices will be lower if you buy online before your visit instead of buying at the park itself.
Grab a Snack
The water park has a number of quick service eateries, as well as table service locations, and plenty of stores to buy souvenirs and other water park necessities. There are lockers available in a few different locations around the park, and free life vests for the little ones.
You are allowed to bring snacks and 2 water bottles per person. Just so you know, if you cut a sandwich in half that is considered a snack. This helped out a ton. We were able to bring our own snack size lunch and enjoy a break in the middle of the day. This allowed us to save the kids one snack for a yummy dessert.
I can’t stress this enough. I have been to plenty of other theme park and water park venues only to find the restrooms are gross and the park rundown. Aquatica has clean facilities and plenty of them. The park is clean and well taken care of.
The staff we encountered were very helpful and friendly. Most of the staff were helpful when getting on the ride and were very pleasant. I’m sure everyone has a bad day, but the day we went everyone was great.
Plan Your Day
We love to go right when the park opens. The line into the park was minimal. The lines for the slides/rides were nonexistent. We walked right on so many rides and plan our day around this. Once the park gets busier, we tend to stay in the pools. Like I said earlier, it gets hotter later in the day. I know a lot of people who like to go to the water parks later in the day because of this. If you’d like to see a list of all our their rides, check out their website.
Speaking of the park being busy, they do have an option to get a Quick Queue. These are bracelets that let you skip the long line. You have unlimited priority entrance to participating attractions. This gives you the chance to ride more rides in less time.
Rides for everyone
There really are rides for everyone. When we first went, I was a little worried my kids wouldn’t be able to ride many rides due to being short for their ages. But I was pleasantly surprised they were able to ride majority of them. Here are our top 5 favorite attractions.
1. Walhalla Wave Tube Ride
This is a family clover-tube ride. It sends guests soaring through watery waves to the top of a zero-gravity wall. It was SO fun. My 7 and 10 year old loved it. Although my 7 year old was a bit nervous at the zero-gravity wall. However she was the first one to ask to go again.
This ride is certainly a must. We rode on it a couple times. The first time, I sat in the tube and went backwards. I get motion sick easily and would we done for the day. So, the second time we went, I made sure my hubby was the one going backwards.
2. Walkabout Water Pools
The Walkabout Water Pool is a 3 story interactive experience for the kids. There are bridges to cross, waterfalls to run under, and plenty of water guns to shoot. They will also love the large bucket of water that spills onto those below. My kids had fun playing in this pool.
3. Tassie’s Twister & HooRoo Run
These two rides use double or single tubes. There are 4 different slides to go on that twist and turn. Some are in the dark while others in the light. These are the 2 rides that we hit when we first come into the park. It is by far one of our favorite rides in the entire park.
4. Taumata Racer
This is a high-speed water slide where riders zoom downhill head first on foam mats. Taumata Racer launches riders in an entry tunnel that makes a swooping, 180-degree turn, then straightens out to make two additional descents over the 375-foot slide length and 55-foot drop in under 10 seconds.
This was one of my favorite rides. It mostly had to do with the gentleman running the ride. He made it feel more like a race. We would stand at our slides, he would countdown until we could go. Whoever makes it to the bottom first wins. It was so fun.
5. Loggerhead Lane
Loggerhead is a fun lazy river. You can hop in a tube, swim, walk or float and enjoy a relaxing time along a winding, 1,200-foot-long water route enhanced by tunnel jets, foam shooters and misters. I really enjoyed the different areas of this lazy rivers. You can get off early at certain points or stay on and enjoy the entire ride.
While I know our tastes are different from others you really can’t go wrong with any of the areas of Aquatica San Antonio. All the rides and pools were so fun. We always have an amazing time and will continue to go back in the future. If you have any questions, feel free to ask away.
My youngest absolutely loved Keer Reef with all the stingrays. In this area you can pet, feed, and observe the stingrays. The rays came right up to us.
You can also sign up for the Stingray Encounter. This is a family-friendly opportunity to get in the water and come face-to-fin with Cownose stingrays in an exotic setting where you will have the chance to touch, feed and marvel at these amazing animals!
